About the Artwork/Design:

The design for Geometric Organic grew out of the previous pattern I made titled ‘Geometic Nature’. The colours in that print reminded me of those found in patterns from the Arts and Craft movement which normally depict organic forms found in nature. Whilst my design for ‘Geometic Nature’ was made up of geometric forms. This made me wonder if organic forms could be combined with geometric forms. I’d made a set of kinetic sculptures in the past that looked almost like tadpoles, a simplified version of them placed on different layers might work. So that some are moving above the diamond spirals and some bellow. At this point a cobalt blue background seemed more fitting giving the impression of sea or sky whilst the organic forms were coloured cream to keep them neutral and break up the intensity of the blue background. The diamond spirals also changed colour from dark green to emerald green. Which combined with the cobalt blue gives an opulence to the pattern. I kept the pink edging to highlight the geometric forms and on some the reddish orange remained as that still worked well with the green and blue. The final pattern feels vibrant and full of energy. It also looks closer to traditional Japanese patterns than the Arts and Craft patterns that initially inspired me to make it.
